How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture has been used in China, Japan and Korea for more than 3000 years. It is the most widely used system of healing on Earth. Ancient classical Chinese texts describe the idea of a universal energy or Qi (chee) that is present throughout nature and in people too. Acupuncture is based on the concept that this energy or Qi flows through the body via pathways or meridians. Points on the meridians can be stimulated to influence and rebalance the distribution and flow of energy.
What benefit can I expect?
Most patients receive significant benefit from treatment. As well as helping with their main condition patients often find that other benefits also occur. These can be wide ranging but commonly include improved sleep patterns, mood and energy. A significant body of clinical research exists to support the benefits of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical conditions. The British Medical Association acknowledge the effectiveness of acupuncture and doctors are increasingly recommending it to their patients.
Is acupuncture painful?
Ultra-fine needles are used which means that little or no pain is experienced during treatment. Other sensations such as warmth and tingling are quite common and these can feel quite pleasant.
How many treatments will I need?
Initially 4 to 5 treatments are usually required although you may feel some benefit sooner. The frequency of treatments may be gradually reduced to a few visits a year to help maintain the benefits received from the initial stages of treatment.
